National Park Service officials announced earlier this week the monument would be closing amid COVID-19 concerns.
The National Park Service announced on Saturday, January 23, that the Washington Monument will be closed indefinitely to the public to protect park staff and visitors from the spread of COVID-19.
It’s not the first time that the monument has had to close because of the pandemic. After reopening in October for the first time since the outbreak of COVID-19, the monument had to close at least twice– Once in December and more recently on January 11 when federal officials decided to close it as part of security measures surrounding President Biden’s inaguration.
This time around, National Mall officials have decided to close other Park Services’ attractions to the public including e Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument, Ford’s Theatre National Historic Site, and tours of Old Post Office Tower. Outdoor memorials and public bathrooms on the Mall remain open however.
