The new museum of the U.S. Army in Fort Belvoir, VA, will open on November 11.
The U.S. Army recently announced the completion of its brand new museum in Fort Belvoir, VA. Originally meant to open during the summer, the museum had to postpone its opening due to coronavirus and will now be opening its doors for the first time for Veterans Day 2020 on Wednesday, November 11.
The National Army Museum will be the first one to showcase the history of the United States Army since its establishment in 1775. “The National Army Museum will be a place for members of the total Army family to gather and share their stories, while also creating an opportunity for visitors to connect with our nation’s history through the eyes and voices of individual Soldiers,” said Secretary of the Army, Ryan D. McCarthy, in a news release.
The museum features interactive exhibits filled with countless artifacts showcasing the Army’s role in “building and defending our nation,” and that detail Army humanitarian missions, and medical and technological developments “built on army ingenuity.” In addition, the on-site theatre and the museum’s Experiential Learning Center will provide visitors of all ages a unique opportunity to participate in hands-on, educational and team-building activities in the areas of geography, science, technology, engineering and math.
Like many other of DC’s museums which have recently reopened to the public, the National Army Museum has also established new health and safety rules to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These include mandatory masks for visitors 2 or older and the museum will also implement social distancing measures. Tickets are free, but guests are required to reserve time slots ahead of their visit.
The opening will be preceded by a small opening ceremony that will be livestreamed “to encourage people to participate in this historic moment.” Links to the livestream will be shared on the museum’s social media channels once it becomes available, but for more information on the new National Museum of the United States Army make sure to visit their website!
