How many times have you picked up a book just to find it was so awful you couldn’t even finish it? Or, possibly worse, you forced yourself to finish in hopes it might get better just to be crushed by disappointment and a waste of time? Then H Street’s Solid State Books has the book club for you: Bad Book Club!
Bad Book Club came to fruition from a random conversation two employees—Kiara Martinez and Nissa Moody—had while working in September. “We were like, ‘It would be so good if there was a club where we could talk about books that are bad in the way that movies are bad, like a Twilight situation,’” Martinez told the Washingtonian.
And so Bad Book Club was born! While it has had some recurrent authors and genres—Colleen Hoover and romance novels have come up a few times—the club doesn’t discriminate on what books members can admit they hate.
“Discuss the books you love to hate,” the club’s description reads on the store’s website. “What books personally offend you with their existence because they were just that bad? Come and dish with us about those books that you DNF’ed or perhaps hate finished.”
There’s no required reading or limitations on the texts you can rant about—so each club meeting is different and a total surprise!
The club meets quarterly on the 3rd Monday of the month. Bad Book Club’s next meeting is Monday, March 20, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
