Did you know, the term beer garden comes from brewers who would plant gardens above their underground beer cellars to keep them at a cool temperature while the beer fermented. Now beer gardens are outdoor spaces where local food and craft beer are served.
Below are some beer gardens that serve draft beer and a menu of scrumptious food that pair excellently with a cold beer in a winsome ambiance. Plus, not only do you get to enjoy fresh food and cold drinks at these bars, but you also support a local business.
1. Garden District
Get the DC experience by enjoying a pint of draft or craft beer or cider and all-American food in the heart of Washington DC. Indeed, combine fried pickels, or a pulled pork sandwich with an Offshoot ‘Drifting’ Pale Ale or with a 3 Floyds ‘Pride and Joy’ American Mild Ale.
2. Shaw Brewpub and Kitchen
Serving draft beer at the fixed price of $6.36 this is the place to go with friends. Share an appetizer they call ‘Sharesies’ that include house-made hot wings and house-made kettle chips. Not in the mood for bar-style appetizers? Opt for their ‘Cheese Counter’ because beer and cheese create an exceptional combination.
3. Hook Hall
This dog-friendly bar doubles as a farmer’s market on Sundays. Their large, organized and extremely elaborate drink menu has all the alcohol you can think of, guaranteed to have something for everyone. Currently, the bar has a cherry blossom theme happening where the space is decorated with lovely artificial cherry trees.
4. Denizens Brewing Company
Located in Silver Spring and in Riverdale Park, they have been “brewing craft beer for every palate since 2014”. Indeed, they have a variety of beers on tap and they serve delicious cocktails too. Pair a beverage with an appetizer or a main course that matches perfectly with their tasty drinks.
Located on the Georgetown waterfront, this “modern German bierhall” serves 24 different kinds of draft beers made locally, in Germany, in Austria, or in Canada. They have a small food menu that paired with one of their beers, will make your taste buds travel.
6. Biergarten Haus
Get a taste of Germany in this authentic German beer garden that is one of H street’s largest outdoor seating spaces. They serve a large variety of draft beers and imported bottled beers, as well as Haus cocktails and batched cocktails. Additionally, to get the full German experience, pair a drink with their hearty traditional German meals like the Wienerschnitzel or the Sausage Platter.
7. The Midlands
Happy hour happens every day at this local bar, with $5 off all bottles of wine, and $5 off all beer flights, Monday to Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and on the weekends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They have 26 draft beers and a selection of wines and cocktails that pair perfectly with their many bar snacks such as their giant 10oz soft pretzel or their beer garden platter.
