The Hirshhorn Museum has partnered with MTV to produce a reality show art competition, “The Exhibit: Finding the Next Great Artist,” set to premiere next month!
Filmed onsite at the Hirshhorn, “The Exhibit”—the latest in a long list of MTV reality competitions—follows seven up-and-coming artists who were hand-picked by Hirshhorn curators to participate in the show. Participating artists include Jamaal Barber (Atlanta, Georgia), Frank Buffalo Hyde (Northfield, Minnesota), Misha Kahn (Brooklyn, New York), Clare Kambhu (Queens, New York), Baseera Khan (Brooklyn, New York), Jillian Mayer (Miami, Florida) and Jennifer Warren (Chicago, Illinois).
“‘The Exhibit: Finding the Next Great Artist’ exemplifies the Hirshhorn’s radical accessibility to modern and contemporary art,” Melissa Chiu, museum director at the Hirshhorn, said in a press release. “The Hirshhorn is free to all, yet many people cannot travel to Washington, D.C. This series will introduce audiences, wherever they are, to art making, spotlighting the importance of artists in society and energizing the Hirshhorn’s art-for-all mission.”
Hosted by MTV News alum Dometi Pongo, each challenge will feature the artists being commissioned to create works that are inspired by and reflect the social themes of works of renowned artists who are already featured in the Hirshhorn, such as Laurie Anderson, Mark Bradford, Yayoi Kusama, and more!
The artists will be evaluated each challenge by Chiu, alongside a rotating judge panel comprised of experts, including artists, art critics, and collectors. The winner of the show will receive a cash prize and the honor of having one of their exhibits put on display at the Hirshhorn.
“The Exhibit: Finding the Next Great Artist” will premiere Friday, March 3 on MTV at 9 p.m. ET, and on the Smithsonian Channel on Tuesday, March 7 at 9 p.m. ET.
