The DC Council approved making Black Lives Matter Plaza permanent on Tuesday, October 21.
The DC Council voted on making Black Lives Matter Plaza permanent. The 16th Street Northwest area near the White House was unofficially renamed after the words “Black Lives Matter” were painted in bright yellow over the summer.
Back in June, D.C. Mayor Bowser announced the creation of the plaza in this section of 16th Street amid widespread protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis.
Now the Plaza will become a permanent fixture of our city after the council voted unanimously to make the name official during a legislative meeting on Tuesday afternoon. The action is expected to go into effect once approved by Mayor Bowser herself.
The Black Lives Matter Plaza area remains closed off to traffic. Meanwhile, restaurants on 16th street and surrounding roads continue to reopen.
