200,000 Flags Have Been Installed On The National Mall To Represent All Inauguration Attendees

This year, Inauguration attendees will be represented by more than 150,000 flags.

Inauguration Day is around the corner and the Nation’s Capital is getting ready for all the festivities. In any other year, thousands of people would’ve gathered on the National Mall to celebrate the incoming administration. But even though the pandemic rages on and people are celebrating safely at home, the National Mall is not staying empty. The Biden-Harris Inaugural Committee has installed almost 200,000 flags representing all those who would’ve attended the ceremony.

The Field of Flags has flooded the National Mall with a stunning and colorful display. The 200,000 flags have been neatly organized in rows starting at Lincoln Memorial to represent all those citizens who would’ve attended the ceremony but that due to COVID-19 concerns will have to stay at home.

Organizers also installed another spectacular flag display on the National Mall in the shape of the U.S. Created with several different flags, this display along with the 56 pillars of light illuminating the Mall are meant to represent the 56 U.S. states and territories.

As part of the celebrations, the Presidential Inaugural Committee has also invited people to donate to their partner charities and become a symbolic sponsor in the Field of Flags, so you too can become an “attendee” of the Biden-Harris Inauguration. The main inauguration ceremony is expected to start on Wednesday morning, January 20, although the specific airtime is yet to be announced.

But for those looking to take part in the celebrations from home, there are still plenty of events taking place ahead of Wednesday. On Tuesday evening, January 19, Biden and Harris are set to lead the DC memorial ceremony in honor to the nearly 400,000 people in the U.S. who have died of COVID-19 in the past year.

The Inaugural Committee will be hosting a memorial service at the Lincoln memorial and a special lighting ceremony of the Reflective Pool which will be livestreamed online for everyone to watch. The committee is also inviting all those who wish to participate in the memorial to place a candle in their windows. Communities around the country are expected to join DC in the ceremony and in lighting up buildings and ringing church bells at 5:30 p.m.
