As spring turns to summer, many fun events are happening this month to take advantage of the nice weather before summer hits full swing!
As vaccinations rise and the weather gets warmer, more and more events will be taking place in the nation’s capital. June is Pride month so many activities involve celebrating the diverse spectrum of sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community. Here are some exciting events happening this month!
1. Have a drag queen read to you
In honor of Pride month, local drag queen and icon Ruth Allen Ginsburg is partnering with Smithsonian American Art Museum to bring you this virtual event. On June 5 at 10 a.m., Ruth Allen Ginsburg will read nursery rhymes and fairytales for children and adults to enjoy from the comfort of your home.
2. Join the Pridemobile Parade
Whether you want to dress up your vehicle in festive colors to participate in the parade or watch it from the sidewalk as they tour the city, this is going to be a fun event to celebrate Pride. Rolling out on June 12 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the parade will route to Dupont and Logan circle, then make its way to the Capitol.
3. Visit the LOVE mural
Created by Lisa Marie, an LGBTQ+ activist and artist, this mural is meant to bring good vibes and positive energy to those who visit it. Painted in the Blagden Alley, this is also a nice spot to take cute Instagram pictures to spruce up your feed. Find out more about this mural in this article here.
4. Brunch for LGBTQ+ charities
On June 13, restaurants across DC will be serving special Pride menu items, that with each purchase of those dishes or drinks, a portion of the purchase will be donated to LGBTQ+ charities. Indeed, you can enjoy delicious brunch and cocktails while giving back to the community. 11 restaurants are participating, check out this link to find the list of restaurants.
5. Eat a burger at a local restaurant
We recently asked our Washingtonian Instagram followers what their favorite burger places are in the city. They came through with many recommendations that we gathered in an article for an easy guide on the best burger joints in DC.
6. Enjoy the vibrant spectacle of the sunset at a memorial
After having dinner at one of the previous burger joints, go for an evening walk to one of the best places to watch the sun go down over this beautiful city. We have some spot suggestions in this article here.
7. Tune in to a Pride-themed trivia night
Participate in a trivia night from the comfort of your home hosted by the DC Public Library on Twitter. Anyone can easily participate; to answer the trivia questions you retweet their question, answer with your best guess and add the hashtag #StayatHomeDCTrivia and post it. This theme night will be on June 28 starting at 6:30 p.m. What a nice way to spend a Monday evening!
8. Visit a newly reopened museum
More and more museums are reopening to the public after being closed for almost a year. In May many of them reopened, and this month a couple more are reopening, notably the Cooper Hewit Smithsonian Design Museum and the National Museum of Natural History. In July, more are being planned to reinvite visitors, so stay tuned for that.
9. Enjoy a pint at a local beer garden
As the weather gets warmer, the beer gets colder. Enjoy a local draft beer at one of the many beer gardens of DC. Local authentic beer, paired with appetizers or snacks while enjoying the nice evening breeze is the perfect springtime activity for this month.
10. Hike through this trail of bluebells
This June will be your last chance to see the Virginia bluebells at Bull Run Regional Park. They have a special trail dedicated to walking through a path of bluebells called the Bluebell trail, where these pretty little flowers grow widely. Visit this trail before it’s too late!
