The WMATA opened its Potomac Yard-VT Metrorail Station on Friday, May 19!
“Today, we witnessed the culmination of decades of hard work,” Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson said in a press release. “This station will be the legacy of every tradesperson, project manager, and the legion of residents who never gave up hope. The Potomac Yard-VT Metro Station will drive transformational economic growth in our city for generations to come. This station will better connect our residents and visitors to education, careers, commerce, and opportunity.”
The first train entered the station at 5:08 a.m.
Established in Alexandria, the new Potomac Yard Station marks a new stop for the Blue and Yellow Lines. In the daytime, the Yellow Line will have trains arriving every 8 minutes, while trains for the Blue Line will arrive every 12 minutes during rush hour.
The $370 million station is situated near the future Virginia Tech Innovation Campus site.
“We are honored to have our name as part of this station, just yards away from the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus,” said Virginia Tech President Tim Sands, “reflecting our commitment to serve this community and the commonwealth for many years to come.”
