Scootch over Christmas, we’ve got a new holiday to celebrate here in the District!
It’s no secret that today, December 24, is Dr. Anthony S. Fauci’s birthday. So in honor of him turning 80 and in the true spirit of the season, Mayor Muriel Bowser has chosen to celebrate the longtime DC resident and infectious disease expert by proclaiming Thursday, December 24, 2020, as “Anthony Fauci Day” in the District.

On Wednesday, December 23, Bowser issued a proclamation for a new local holiday celebrating Dr. Fauci. In her announcement, she praised Fauci for his extraordinary work as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, his commitment to serve President-elect Joe Biden as chief medical advisor, his service to six U.S. Presidents and, of course, his unwavering love for the Washington Nationals.
“Dr. Fauci has been a hero to our nation during this incredibly difficult year, working tirelessly to save lives and guide our nation’s response to and recovery from the pandemic,” said Mayor Bowser. “We are incredibly proud to count him among the many DC residents who are sacrificing so much to keep our communities healthy and safe. I issue this honor on behalf of all Washingtonians in gratitude and recognition of Dr. Fauci’s service to our nation and our city.”
Bowser continued on to encourage all Washingtonians to join her “in wishing him the happiest of birthdays,” this Thursday, December 24. With the new proclamation, Fauci joined several other famous Washingtonians who got a day devoted to them in D.C. Just last year the city celebrated late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgh for her 86th birthday back in March on RBG Day, Wayne Rooney day also in March and Taraji P. Henson in February.
So this Christmas Eve 2020 we hope you have a merry evening, can celebrate and be as close as you can to your loved ones while also staying safe. And remember to celebrate the man who has been helping many of us to stay safe, sane and calm during this difficult year.
As for what Dr. Fauci himself will be doing and how he’ll be celebrating this Christmas Eve, he told the Washington Post he would be foregoing his usual Christmas plans and would be staying at home with his wife.
