The new Buzzard Point drive-in will open on Friday, September 25
It’s the year of drive-ins and boy aren’t we glad about it! They were all the rage this summer–just last month DC got to enjoy the fiercest drive-in of all with RuPaul’s Drag Queens–and it would seem like they aren’t going out of style yet because a new one is coming to Southwest DC this month. The Capitol Riverfront Drive-In series is opening at Buzzard Point on Friday, September 25, until Friday, October 30, so you can enjoy some killer movies, retro-style!
Located at The Akridge Lot just outside Audi Field will screen some awesome movies including Selma, Abominable and other Halloween classics. All sessions will allow for up to 75 cars per movie and all $20 ticket donations will be directed to the Capital Area Food Bank, D.C. Central Kitchen, and Van Ness Elementary School.
In order to ensure everyone’s safety there will be no vending on-site and viewers will not be allowed to leave their cars unless headed to the restroom. If you’re feeling peckish, Capitol River encourages guests to order food from one of 60 different neighborhood restaurants which you can then pick up at the drive-in.
The drive-in series will kick off with a showing of Selma on September 25 in honor of the late Congressman John Lewis and the civil rights protests that still “resonate with the Black Lives Matter movement today,” the BID said in a release. Starting in October, the drive-in will screen several horror movies in honor of Spooky Season including a double feature of Dracula and Franskenstein.
The drive-in series will wrap up on October 30 with a Halloween classic chosen by the public via Instagram. Voting opened on Wednesday, September 2, and current options include Beetle Juice, The Corpse Bride, The Adams Family and Poltergeist. You can still cast your vote on Capitol River’s Instagram!
