Take a dip in nature’s swimming pools and escape the city!
If you’re feeling adventurous and in need of a day trip, try road tripping to one of these nearby lakes and beach shores. Enjoying the sun and swimming in cool wild waters is the perfect weekend trip to escape the city for a little while.
1. Beaver Dam Swimming Club
This freshwater quarry in Maryland is perfect for children. It has two pools, one that is 5 feet deep, the other is 40 feet deep equipped with a rope swing. Lifeguards are on duty, but swimming is at your own risk. They also have volleyball courts, picnic areas, and places to cookout. A perfect spot for a family day!
2. Herrington Manor State Park
This swimming beach is open from 8 a.m. to sunset every day. Refreshment stands are closed but boat and bike rentals are available for tours. Indeed, there’s plenty to do and visit in this gorgeous state park situated three hours away from the capital.
3. Assateague State Park
This state park is Maryland’s only oceanfront park, about a three-hour drive from DC. Its two miles of beaches allow visitors to relax in the sun, enjoy fun beach activities, and cool off in the refreshing Atlantic ocean.
4. Flag Ponds Nature Park
Located an hour and a half drive outside of DC, this sandy beach is perfect for a little getaway in nature. According to their website, “millions of years ago, sharks, whales, crocodiles and other creatures inhabited the waters and shores of this area.” So, little fossils and teeth can be found if searched for on these beaches. An admissions fee is required to enter the park that varies depending on the season.
5. Sandy Point State Park
Only an hour drive from DC, you will have a super fun beach day here! Lifeguards protect the beach and restrooms and shower facilities are open for use. Refreshments and beach supplies can be purchased as well.
