Discover one of the largest ofrendas in D.C., take in Frida & Diego’s poignant works as they swirl around you in 360-degree projections, and partake in Dia de los Muertos-inspired activities from face painting to mezcal cocktails and live Mariachi music.
Ring in Dia de los Muertos at this special event!
Dia de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in Mexico, Latin America and throughout the world, where communities come together to honor the lives of their passed loved ones. This commemoration usually takes place through building altars, holding candlelight vigils and in enjoying the beloved foods, drinks and items of the deceased.
On November 2, ‘Mexican Geniuses’ brings one of the largest ofrendas to D.C. — complemented by lovely activities to keep that celebration alive. All attendees are welcome to pay homage to their deceased loved ones by adding their own memorabilia to an artisanal altar. Perhaps you can even pay homage to Frida and Diego at the dedicated altar!
The celebration will honor the profound relationship between the living and the dead by catering activities for the whole family. A family-friendly gathering will take place in the morning, featuring face painting and sugar skulls treats. And at night, mezcal cocktails will mark the start of an adult-only fiesta party. Featuring traditional Mexican dishes and live Mariachi music, the event will get you up and moving!
Dia de los Muertos D.C. (DDMDC), the organization that helped organize the event, wants us to remember:
It is imperative to understand that we must not fear death, and instead learn to embrace it, feel free to speak about it, seek support from those around us, celebrate the lives that we have, and pay tribute to the lives of the loved ones that we have lost.
